The use of rubrics to assess authentic student work has gained acceptance as a valid approach for assessing quality in higher education. This session will review the effective use of rubrics and student work in assessment and lessons learned from two nationwide projects, the VALUE/Multi-State Collaborative and newly established VALUE Institute, that support direct assessment and help educators use evidence to improve student learning and success. Discussion will focus on key issues in the VALUE Institute’s promotion of this approach to address equity and quality, as well as the projects intent to keep this work authentic, faculty-driven and affordable.
